Most of this is based on 'add9' chords, with a nice picking 
pattern too. Use the right hand palm to damp the strings and get 
dry staccato feel.


You can play this by fingering only three notes of the chord to start 
with and moving your first finger across to get the top note. I'll 
mark the notes to play with the first finger with a '*' then you can 
see how this finger moves between strings to get the notes.

(You only need this for the first two shapes)

Play in key of CD/Tape

Capo across 1st fret 
I notice that there is a new posting of Every Breath You Take, which tells
you that the key of the song is either in B, or alternatively in G. 

Just to put the cat among the pigeons, Sting was on TV the other night live
in Oslo, and his guitarist was DEFINITELY playing in A. I'll not bother
describing the chord shapes as they're much the same as the ones already 
shown, just in a different key. 

As I see it, there are 3 valid ways to play the song

A) In G, with a capo on the first fret. This is the easiest on your left hand
and is probably the best key to play in if you're doing it on an acoustic.

B) In A, with the guitar tuned down a semitone. This is how they did it in
concert the other night, and it sounds better (I think). However, it's murder
to play.

C) In A, with the guitar tuned down a semitone, except for the bass E string,
which you tune up a semitone. Only use this string for the F#madd2 chord. 
This is a compromise between A) and B). However you can't use the bass string
for the chords under 'Since you've been gone I've been lost..', so it doesn't
sound as big.

Sorry, it's definitely not in B!

I just saw the TAB posted for Police's "Every Breath You Take"

It looks OK, kind of, but as corrections etc were asked for I thought I'd
put in my two penneth worth

The way I play it, and I'm 98% certain it's how it's played on the record, is

to use bar chords. It's more of a stretch I know, but it is worth it - it
sounds good.

It's all based on added 9th chords (Andy Summs' favourite chord by the way...!)

Here are the shapes :

   Aadd9      F#madd9     Dadd9     Eadd9

...and before anyone gets really confused that b in the Eadd9 chord means

I left out the Cadd9 shape - just mive the D shape down two frets.


Get those fingers moving and give it a try.

If you want to be really authentic, then get a delay on it set to one quaver
(eighth note) so the delay is always exactly one note behind what you're playing

I remember trying out the posted tab and thought it sounded a bit off,
so I broke out the video...
Howards chords are correct.Well except in that Summers doesnt form the
barre, he uses the tip of his barre finger to play the notes, ie he
moves his finger between the strings while holding the position
with his other fingers.Because of the order of the picking you'll find
plenty oftime to do this,and eliminates buzz(it IS a difficult stretch)
I also find it very hard to sing to while playing it at the same time.
Can anyone else manage it??!!

did Summers EVER come up with it?????

I must admit that I think it is a great exercise and I use it mostly for that. T
ry it on an acoustic......WHEW!!!

I haven't gotten proficient enough at it to sing to but maybe one day....

I missed the earlier postings but it's really not a stretch at all if
you tune your guitar to a dropped-D.  If you folks are already playing
a dropped-D and a stretch is still required, well, I guess I just don't
know what I am talking about then :) .

 Well with the chords I originally posted it's actually *more* of a stretch
using a dropped D tuning. (I guess you mean drop the low E to a D?)

The shapes I use are :

  EADGBE     EADGBE     EADGBE      EADGBE
  5796xx     2462xx     x579xx      x79axx

where a = 11  (just a handy way of writing it)

  these are the main chords - I forgot the names, they are :

  Aadd9       F#madd9     Dadd9    Eadd9

On the D and E chords he alternates between an add9 and a 'straight' chord i.e
he moves form e.g  x579xx  to  x577xx

As someone wrote in, the way Andy Summers plays the first two chords is to
finger the first three notes (E,A,D strings) with first, third and fourth finger
and when you get to the note on the G string, move your first finger over to
play it.

Basically your first finger constantly moves between fingering a note on the E
string and a note on the G string. That way you don't have to hold down the
whole shape at once

I can't see a way of using a dropped D to make these any easier !

(In fact the F#add9 chord is a hell of a stretch with the dropped D)
